Alaska, it’s the land itself – its vast distances, the extreme weather, the imposing landscapes – that has shaped history and shaped the lives of all those who come under its spell. People have been lured by riches beyond their wildest dreams – fur, fish, gold, oil. Many have come to find a new life and to make their mark. Others come to lose themselves in a wild land more vast and unforgiving than they could ever imagine. They’ve come to measure themselves against its challenges. In return, they’ve endured bitter temperatures, isolation, and harrowing adventures for the privilege of living there.

Ericka Koss, Literature Specialist for the National Endowment for the Arts, will discuss The Big Read as a response to the decline of American reading habits. Her lecture will focus on Jack London within the context of other California writers such as John Steinbeck and
Robinson Jeffers.

There have been some interesting book club picks this month so I thought I would pass them along to you.

At Burbank Public Library, they are continuing the Big Read program where everyone in the city reads the same book. This month's choice is Jack London's "Call of the Wild." There will be programs throughout the month and it runs from September 27 to November 2.

I love the Big Read program because it does get to me to read books I never would have thought to pick up like "Marley & Me" by John Grogan. ~ w/ Anna M's. permission

THE BIG READ...
September 27 -- November 2, 2008

The BIG READ is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of its citizens.

The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment.

The Huntington Library was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to host a Big Read celebration of Jack London’s The Call of the Wild. This program is all about reaching out to nonreaders and readers at
risk. It represents a commitment to promote the sheer enjoyment of reading through the writing of an author like Jack London.

As was true during his lifetime, Jack London continues to be an extraordinarily charismatic figure who readily draws readers into his robust tales of adventure. He was himself an
adventurer, who followed his own call of the wild to the Alaskan Klondike, to the South Pacific on a ship he built, and to many parts of the world as a journalist and war correspondent. He read
voraciously and was always convinced that he could learn to do anything, if he could read about it in a book.

The Huntington has enlisted partners whose mandate includes working with, and reaching out to, lapsed or reluctant readers. Partners include libraries, public schools, and community organizations, several of which will serve as venues for the Big Read events. They represent 10 cities in the area: Alhambra, Arcadia, Burbank, Pasadena, Pico Rivera, Montebello, San Diego, San Marino, Sierra Madre, and South Pasadena.
